Nevada License Plates history.

The dry weather in Nevada has preserved many of the older license plates for historians and collectors to review. In 1913, a small dashboard disc was issued with a special number –the vehicle owner was required to provide license plates to match. The State of Nevada first issued license plates in 1916. This was a yellow on green undated license plate. In 1917, Nevada issued a dated silver on blue flat or non-embossed license plate. Flat license plates were issued from 1917 through 1922. In 1923, an embossed license plate was issued and this manufacturing continues except for a few years where license plate numbers were de-bossed. Today, the Nevada license plate is digitally printed and the result is flat with just the border embossed.

The June 1964 date strip commemorated 100 years of Nevada statehood with the legend: 1864 – NEVADA – 1964 above the word CENTENNIAL. In 1987 graphic base introduced the slogan THE SILVER STATE along the bottom of the plate and was valid through 1993.  Nevada’s first screened graphic license plate showed a rugged mountain range scene from desert terrain to snowcapped peaks, complete with a mountain goat. Reflective sheeting was first introduced in 1967, Blue on Reflective White.

Nevada is a haven for car collectors. The dry desert weather is ideal for preserving older cars. Major auto museums are located in the Imperial Palace Hotel, The Mall at Caesar’s Palace and the Ferrari/Maserati dealership in the Wynn Resort. The SEMA Show, known as largest annual auto aftermarket show in the world, is hosted by Las Vegas each year in the fall.

Minnesota License Plates

Minnesota issued its first license plate in 1909.

As early as 1903, Minnesota authorized state boiler inspectors to register motor vehicles. The license number was painted on the automobile and the vehicle owner can choose to license vehicle with the state or local cities. In 1905, the state was the only government body to register automobiles.

The first slogan appeared on Minnesota license plates in 1949: 1849-centennial-1949 was embossed/stamped  on the bottom of license plates  to celebrate 100 years of statehood. In 1950, the slogan 10,000 LAKES was embossed/stamped on the license plates and this continues today. In 1987, the word EXPLORE was screen on to top left of Minnesota license plates and still appears.

The 1978 graphic was a lake scene with a canoe being paddled. The outline of a map of the state of Minnesota separated numbers from letters. The basic layout of the 1978 graphic appears on all Minnesota non-special interest license plates today. Prior to 1979, all Minnesota license plates were very standard with practical designs for easy recognition by law enforcement.

The 1912 through 1914 license plate issues were unusual, the year was embossed but unpainted while all the other embossed numbers were painted black. The 1949 plate issued by Minnesota was made of waffle Aluminum. Waffles made thin aluminum stronger. All license plates issued by Minnesota were dated with the year. Minnesota issued its only porcelain license plate in 1909. Minnesota issued its first retro-reflective license plate in 1956. Today, Minnesota’s license plates are digitally printed with an embossed/stamped  border, but the license plate number is flat (non-embossed/non-stamped).

Minnesotans are avid collectors of classic antique cars and through the state, barns have been converted to store classic cars.  Many “barn finds” of classic cars have been found in Minnesota and classic car restoration outfits and classic car collectors have called www.licenseplates.tv to re-create classic license plates for their show cars and museum cars.

Netherlands – Holland, Dutch License Plates

Netherlands – Holland, Dutch License Plates

The Dutch or Netherlands or Holland license plates are issued by national traffic agency Rijksdienst voor het Wegverkeer (RDW).  Dutch vehicle registration plates are assigned bearing the same “number” (a sequence of characters composed of letters and digits) as that shown on the vehicle’s registration document. The numbering schemes used bears no relation to the place of a vehicle’s registration or ownership, and numbers – which are issued in strict time order – identify the vehicle, not its owner. Thus if a vehicle changes ownership the registration number remains unchanged.

The Netherlands/Holland introduced a system of vehicle registration plates on the 26th April 1898 – the third country in the world to do so, after France in 1893 and Germany in 1896.  Originally, plate numbers stayed with the owner, unlike the present system. From 1906 a new system used the format LL-NNNNN, where LL was a province code and NNNNN a serial number. This system lasted until 1951, when the current system was introduced.

NETHERLANDS/DUTCH/HOLLAND PROVINCE CODES FOR LICENSE PLATES

A = Groningen

B = Friesland

D = Drenthe

E = Overijssel

G, GZ, GX = Noord Holland

H, HZ, HX = Zuid Holland

K = Zeeland

M = Gelderland

N = Noord Brabant

L = Utrecht

P = Limburg

THE NETHERLANDS – DUTCH – HOLLAND LICENSE PLATE NUMBERING FORMAT

The current Dutch license plate colors are black on reflective yellow plates.  For Taxis the colors are black on a reflective yellow background.  Dutch (Holland/Netherlands) Taxi license plates are: Black on a reflective blue background.

Dutch car number plates can be formatted as follows

1999–2008 NL 99-XX-XX Side Code 6 First in GAIK[clarification needed](Gecontroleerde Afgifte en Inname Kentekenplaten, eng.: controlled issue and taking of license plates)  series (except for 99-DX-XX-series), new font, black border and blue patch with NL were added.
2006–present NL 99-XXX-9 Side Code 7
NL 9-XXX-99 Side Code 8
NL XX-999-X Side Code 9
NL X-999-XX Side Code 10

Letters nowadays do not include vowels as to avoid profane or obscene language. To avoid confusion with a zero, the letters C and Q are also omitted. Letters and numbers are given out in strict alphabetical/numeric order. Hence, a Dutch license plate says all about the date of registration of a car, but nothing about where the car comes from or to whom it belongs.

Other Formats

With the introduction of the GAIK series, several other formats have been introduced as well
